A truly fantastic representation of how us freelancers feel when a client tries to take the cheap way out. It’s undermining to the individual and to the web industry. This video depicts various scenarios that all send the same message to each and every industry out there. Whether one runs a freelance business, an upscale dining venue or a music store, no one should have to expect to pay or earn less than the true value of a product or service.

Here is another example of a company trying too hard to be modern and hip. The design agency that created this look clearly took direction from the PepsiCola company who probably told them to put a fresh spin on a dated company. Don’t get me wrong, I love Pepsi’s product. Just not loving the new product packaging. Fair enough, right?
I will say that I like the Pepsi can better than the Sierra Mist can and here’s why. The use of white space was executed well in the Pepsi design. However, the tree silhouette in the Sierra Mist design seems to have no relevance. Also don’t think that “mist” looks misty, if that is the effect it is intended to give.
What are your thoughts? Love or hate the new look?

With the creation of this Hallmark holiday, our American culture has generally come to terms that it’s important to celebrate this holiday with or without a loved one. Preferably with, right? Correct me if I’m wrong, but the ultimate Valentine’s Day includes the following:
- Romantic candlelit dinner that consists of your sweetie’s favorite entree and side dishes.
- Sweet and savory heart-shaped dessert.
- A dozen long-stemmed red roses.
- Box of rich dark chocolates.
- Hallmark card filled with heartfelt words about your relationship.
- A romantic comedy and/or some type of fun, spontaneous activity.
Well, despite having the love of my life, this year, the two of us have decided not to partake in any of these activities. It’s a concept I haven’t considered before until now, but I think it’s worth a shot. After a long discussion last night about the significance of the holiday, it makes sense that a couple’s love should be celebrated all year long. I suppose I’m a little bummed that we won’t be doing anything on February 14th, but I am willing to compromise. His argument is that Valentine’s Day forces pressure on the man to drop a good chunk of his paycheck on marked-up presents and a full-course meal out at a fancy restaurant. My argument is, why not take the time to be extra romantic? It’s fun to look forward to something out of the ordinary. I think it’s the spice of life. His take? It’s a pseudo-love holiday. It imposes the unreal on the real.
Want to show your love? Act on it when it’s least expected. Not when society tells you to do so.
What’s your take on Valentine’s Day? Love it or hate it? Or, are you like me, where you could go either way?

Client: “Can you design this for me, please?”
Me: “Sure, I accept payment via PayPal based on milestone completion.”
Client: “Actually, I’m not sure what kind of design I want. I was hoping you could just come up with a new look and feel for my website. I have a few others doing the same, then I’ll pick the best and we’ll go from there.”
Me: “Uhm. No. I do not endorse spec work.”
What’s spec work? “Basically, its any kind of creative work rendered and submitted, either partial or completed, by a designer to a prospective client/employer before taking steps to secure both their work and an equitable fee.” -NO!SPEC Campaign

What’s that you say?
Google has just released their new favicon, which is short for “favorites icon.” This little square image is usually located in the tab bar or title page of a website.
My two cents? Juvenile and boring. It looks like a child colored this. Uh, props to coloring within the lines. The only thing that got me excited about this was that the original inspiration drew from a college student living in Campinas, Brasil, which is where I spent my student exchange days.
What are your thoughts on Google’s favicon?
Here’s what Google had to say in their blog.

The Illinois House impeached Gov. Rod Blagojevich today in a historic vote of 114-1.
“The vote by the House was 114-1 with one member voting ‘present.’ It marks the first time in the state’s 190-year history that a governor has been impeached, despite Illinois’ longstanding reputation for political corruption.
Rep. Milt Patterson (D-Chicago) was the lone vote against impeachment. The ‘present’ vote was cast by Rep. Elga Jefferies (D-Chicago).
A spokesman for the governor said he won’t resign.”

Logo design in today’s world is totally under rated. People do not understand how important a good logo is and how valuable it is to their business. This article outlines the ways in which you should NOT go about getting your logo designed… that is, if you are truly serious about business.
